Herbal Magic and the Tarot
As I wrote last time, working with the Tarot Profiles
(the card combinations associated with the numerology of your birth
date) has long been one of my favorite adjuncts to "regular" Tarot
readings. (Speaking of which, you may want to check out my new series of
articles I announce elsewhere in this issue).
And last year, I added an extra dimension to
that work by blending herbal mixtures that I feel enhance the
experience of the Tarot cards.
"So Beth," my emails and chats have gone,
"how do you pick the herbs? How do you know what goes with what?"
Ah, yes. That indeed is the question.
Well, for starters, I have been working with
the magical energies of herbs and plants for a long, long time --
almost as long as I have worked with the Tarot.
I have studied the works, especially, of
Scott Cunningham, Madalene Hill, Rosemary Gladstar, Ellen Dugan, Ellen
Evert Hopman, Patricia Monaghan, and Ann (Aoumiel) Moura.
I have also learned much from my magical
sister, Linda (Alruna) Rago, a Rune master, wise grandmother, long-time
member of the Herb Society of America, and their prestigious Rosemary Circle, and the author of at least half-a-dozen renowned herbal lore books.
My best teachers, however, are the herbs
themselves. Some people knit or paint or cook to go into the magical
"zone." My Green friends take me there every time; just thinking about
them as I write this makes something in the air sparkle and come alive!
So I have to say, it really was their
idea to combine my love for the Tarot with their gifts of insight,
healing, and inspiration. One morning I was asking the cards, "What's
the next step, for me to be of service with my Tarot practice?" I
actually heard my shelves full of herbs laughing and chatting and
calling to me, as the cards also enthusiastically agreed!
(Life around my house is pretty .. um .. lively, can you tell?)
So that day, I began mixing the combinations
for the Soul Cards - the Magician, Lovers, Hermit, Empress, Chariot,
and the rest. It was the most natural thing in the world.
And I never once worried whether the herbs would combine to create a pleasing scent - they knew exactly how to cover that issue! I just followed their directions, and, well, the rest is history!
Part of the impetus for creating them, of
course, is to enhance and heighten your own work with your Soul Card. In
addition, though, I have to admit to you that I am on a not-so-secret
secret mission!
I am campaigning for everyone to know their Tarot Soul Card, the same way they know their astrological Sun sign.
But figuring out your Soul Card, as well as
the Soul Card of friends, family, and colleagues is such an easy, fun
way to get started. Plus you get the same results, regardless of which
calculating method you use.
And it is just as easy to figure out your Tarot Year, which as I keep promising, I really will share next time!

Astrological Tidbits
Take a Deep, Sweet Breath.. October Smiles!
After a summer filled with drama (that off again, on again showdown square between Pluto and Uranus that keeps making things so perilous and intense), October brings a much calmer planetary forecast for us.
In fact, astrologer Lance Ferguson notes, "This looks like the best month of the year for major events in your life—coming and going. Mars makes just one stressful contact, a square to sloppy Jupiter
on the 2nd. But that’s the only really difficult moment in the Skywatch
in October. And we have the longest set of kiss [especially positive]
days in October that I have ever seen before.
"Plus, we now have planets in seven
different signs scattered all over the Zodiac. That suggests lots of new
ideas, contacts and opportunities floating around—look outside the box
this month and explore. Shorter Void of Course [Moon] cycles will also
please us in the weeks ahead. Green lights are on for work or play in
October."
Astrologer Lynn Hayes agrees, writing, "As October begins, the two planets [ Pluto and Uranus]
are two degrees from the exact square formation, and by the end of the
month they will be far enough apart that the influence of the cycle is
waning."
She adds, "This gives us a planetary rest
period with virtually no major planetary cycles to create disruption.
It's an opportunity for us to get back on track in our personal lives,
and there will also be an unwinding of the stress that we've seen in the
international arena. The month begins with four planets in Libra which helps us to regain our equilibrium ( Libra is the sign of balance)."
Lynn suggests how we can take advantage of this benevolent aspect. "Throughout the month, Jupiter, traveling retrograde, is moving into position to form a harmonious trine to Pluto.
This is the second phase of a cycle that began in July and is a
beautiful alignment for the expansion of our personal empowerment and
confidence. Under this influence we can accomplish many things, so it's
important to be clear about what we want our lives to look like."
Highlights this month include the Full Moon in Aries on Tuesday the 11th. At StarIQ, Jeff Jawer writes, "The independent and spontaneous Aries Full Moon faces off against the Sun and Saturn in partnering and patient Libra. We're faced with the choice of following our own instincts and acting alone or making compromises to get along with others.
"Nevertheless," he explains, "it's wise to
negotiate in good faith instead of operating unilaterally. When each
individual's needs are taken into account, in spite of differences
between them, stronger relationships can be built. The presence of
serious Saturn suggests that alliances that include personal freedom in a framework of cooperation can produce innovation that lasts."
Two days later, on the 13th, Mercury moves into the sign of Scorpio,
which Jeff suggests gives us an unusual ability to read between the
lines, and to willingly go deeper than usual, to find the solutions and
knowledge we need.
Judy Joyce
notes that between the 17th and 23rd, we could hear good news and new
optimism may come from "a positive mix of inspiration, spirituality,
idealism, mysticism, creativity, sociability, and practical and
realistic ideas and discussions. It will be a good combination of spirit
and substance."
She also notes that the New Moon in Scorpio on
the 26th ushers in a very positive planetary pattern. "The potential
exists," she writes of this period till the end of the month, "for some
powerful and beneficial transformations at this time. The energies will
be expansive, enthusiastic and optimistic. We can come up with effective
ways of getting things accomplished now and can have the patience and
dedication to actually do it."
After everything we've been through, and
challenging days no doubt yet to come, this is all good news indeed!
May the stars shine brightly for you in the days ahead!

Announcing a New Series in my
MetaArts Magazine column!
If you've been
following me for a while, you may remember that prior to the 2008
presidential election, I wrote a series of articles about the Tarot
profiles of the main contenders.
Because we now have a substantial crowd
for the 2012 race, I thought it would be interesting to once again have
a look at the Tarot Soul and Personality combinations of the current
presidential candidates.
In November,
I'll begin taking a look at the rest of the field, starting with the
Tarot profile of Mitt Romney. And by December, we'll see who else is
still in the race!

This month, the Owl Mail was pretty quiet, other than inquiries about the upcoming classes and so on (thank you!).
But I did receive this heartfelt question:
I
love reading your WINGS newsletter, even if it is a few days later.
Lately things around me are so fuzzy and I feel like I am spinning out
of control sometimes. I really want to quit working (part-time) for
this woman who has been belittling me for the past few months. Even
friends and customers have commented. I just don't know how to do it
nicely. Any suggestions? Have a blessed day.
Namaste, ~ E.A.
I so understand how easy it is to get locked into a job (or a marriage, friendship, club, or any kind of relationship) where we feel paralyzed and afraid to make changes or confront people. I have been there, too!
And in our jobs, it may seem even more difficult, especially in this economy. Or so the saying goes.
But I am here to tell you that staying in any
situation where, over time, your faith in yourself and your joy in
living are being poisoned or sabotaged day in and out is really the worst thing you can do. Yes, even in this economy!
So maybe it is time to say goodbye.Take your time and do it under your own terms if possible. You don't have to be nicey-nicey, but you can do it with clarity, compassion and integrity.
For
instance, perhaps you could see this as a valuable lesson of how
important your boundaries are. You have learned something about what
your priorities are, and where you draw the line. You don't need to
thank her literally for that, but perhaps thinking of it that way will
take some of the sting out of what has happened.
As
for the economy, etc., I have noticed that when we act according to our
highest values (especially with kindness and wisdom towards ourselves),
the loving Universe responds with support.
Thank you for writing, E. Let us know how it works out. I wish you great good fortune!
Remember - if you’d like to write, comment, ask me a question or make an observation, I’d love to hear from you. Naturally, before I print your comments here, I reserve the right to edit. Just email me! Thanks!

Thank you again for taking the time to include me in your day. It truly is my honor.
As October brings the deepening twilight and
we scurry to prepare for Winter's advance, I wish for you warmest
blessings of health, hearth, and bountiful harvests of delight.
Blessings to you,
