December, 2008 -- Vol. 1, Number 6

The Wheel of Fortune Comes Full Circle...

As I wrote in my July premiere edition of WINGS, 2008 has been our year of the Wheel of Fortune.

As you may remember, we arrive at that based on adding 2+0+0+8=10, which corresponds to the tenth trump card in the Tarot, the Major Arcana "Wheel of Fortune."

There certainly can be no argument that this has been a year of profound changes and challenges.

I am reminded of the popular notion that, according to unspecified wisdom traditions, the Chinese characters for "crisis" are a combination of "danger" and "opportunity." This has been thoroughly debunked, but there is a lovely interpretation of the 59th hexagram of the I Ching, Huan or Dissolution, which I think illuminates the lessons we've been experiencing in this Wheel of Fortune year:

"Crisis means opportunity, but only when all of like mind can be organized behind one compelling visionary ideal.

"This is particularly true during disorganized times, when energies and resources are scattered. Great energy and generosity are needed to seize the moment, and rally behind the common cause.

"At such times, remember, if you are not part of the cause, you will become one of the effects."

I hope that this Wheel of Fortune year has been a fortunate one for you and your loved ones. We shall certainly be looking forward to what the New Year offers.

Holiday Blessings,
-- Beth
